C Spire Wireless Academic All-Stars Awards Presented to 11 Students

Wireless carrier, Commercial Appeal newspaper honor Memphis area student scholars in areas of achievement, leadership, good character and community service

Memphis, Tenn. (May 7, 2012) - Eleven high school student-scholars in the greater Memphis area received the prestigious C Spire Wireless Academic All-Stars award on Friday, May 4 for excellence in academics, leadership and community service during the 2011-2012 school year.

The overall winners were selected by a panel of independent judges from among 170 students who received weekly awards in the program sponsored by C Spire and administered by the Commercial Appeal newspaper.

Winners in the 10 curriculum categories, including art, drama and speech, English and literature, foreign language, general scholarship, mathematics, music, science, social sciences and history and career-technical, included:

 


General Scholarship

  • Caroline Orr, Hutchinson School, Memphis
  • Brandon Zheng, Collierville High School, Collierville

Music
  • Nick Deatherage, Bolton High School, Arlington

Foreign Language
  • Sara Kim, St. Mary's Episcopal School, Memphis

Science
  • Matt Rivera, Briarcrest Christian School, Eads

Drama and Speech
  • Melanie Culhane, Germantown High School, Germantown

Art
  • S.T. Davis, Millington Central High School, Millington

Career-Technical
  • Morgan Riley, Hernando High School, Hernando, Mississippi

English and language
  • Molly Yates, Bolton High School, Arlington

Mathematics
  • Eli Goldstein, Memphis University School, Memphis

Social Sciences and History
  • Sarah Naids, Houston High School, Germantown

This year's recipients included National Merits scholarship winners, Advanced Placement scholars, a Princeton Prize for Race Relations winner, a Tennessee All-State Band member, and attendees to Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam's Schools program. General scholarship winner Caroline Orr of Hutchinson School was named to the 48th class of Presidential scholars. She was one of 141 students selected for the honor by the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars from among 3,300 candidates nationwide. Orr is one of three 2012 Presidential scholars from Tennessee and the only one from west Tennessee.

The C Spire Wireless Academic All-Star program was developed to identify and recognize high school students for excellence in academics, school leadership and community service. "Education has always been important to our company," said Jim Richmond, director of Corporate Communications for C Spire Wireless. "This program not only salutes these bright students, but encourages them to stay in the greater Memphis area after they finish college," he said. "C Spire really cares about the Memphis area and we feel that this is a terrific program for the region's future."

Now in its sixth year, the C Spire Academic All-Stars Awards are presented weekly over 28 weeks during the academic year from nominations submitted by school administrators from 93 participating high schools in the Bartlett- Cordova, Germantown-Collierville, DeSoto County, Millington-Tipton areas and city of Memphis.

Judges included educators from Rhodes College, the University of Memphis, Le-Moyne Owen College and Christian Brothers University. Each Sunday during the academic year, C Spire Academic All-Stars are announced through a published feature article in The Commercial Appeal.
